Free Comic Book Day - May 1st

This Saturday is once again Free Comic Book Day. "Free Comic Book Day is a single day - the first Saturday in May each year - when participating comic book shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely FREE* to anyone who comes into their stores. *Check with your local shop for their participation and rules."

Every year, I stop by my local comic book store and pick up a free copy or two of comics. The full list of the comics you can get for free should be on their official website. Here's a sample of some of the comics they're giving away:

Buggy Riding Weekend in PA

I Love Frozen Yogurt

I love frozen yogurt with fresh fruits, and I especially love getting it from CaliYogurt, because they set it up as a self-service shop. You come in, grab the size of bowl you want, choose one or all of the flavors you like, push the lever down while positioning your bowl under the tube and let it flow as much as you want. Then you move on to the toppings "bar" and add whatever you want and however much you want. Lastly, you take your full bowl to the scale, the person working the shop will weigh it and tell you the price. You pay and enjoy your "personalized" frozen yogurt.

I personally think it's cheaper than other shops I've been to. Most shops give you so little and adding toppings costs extra, but they only put a couple of small strawberry or kiwi slices on it or 3 pieces of blueberries or etc. It's also inconsistent. Sometimes you get more, sometimes less, but you end up paying the same price. CaliYogurt sets a standard price for their forzen yogurt, and the price you pay depends on the weight of your "bowl". You also get to try every single flavor without paying extra. Some shops charge more for special flavors like green tea or taro. Unfortunately, they only have one location in Maryland and another one in DC. So I have to drive far to get it, but it's still worth the drive, especially on a nice warm sunny day.

This picture would have looked a lot better, but I got too excited, and grabbed a few spoonful of goodness before I thought of taking a picture.

Philippines 2010 Presidential Elections

The Philippines Presidential election is coming up in May. I actually registered for the absentee voting thing when I was at the embassy to renew my passport. I received the ballot a few weeks ago, and I still haven’t decided who to vote for. I have asked several people on who they would vote for and why. It has been very helpful and informative, but I still don’t feel like I have enough information to make a decision.

I’m almost tempted to just not vote at all. With all the corruption in the government, most people are close to losing hope in the government and the politicians who claimed to have the people’s best interests in mind. It is quite evident that their campaign proclamations are untrue, because the politicians are continuing to make their pockets fatter while the people continue to suffer from poverty.

It’s easy to see how people can feel hopeless in a country where you can easily buy votes and convicted criminals and terrorists can actually win elections by a landslide. If you’re a popular actor/actress that’s well-liked by the people and/or you’re super rich and you can afford to give lots of money away to people in exchange for their votes, then you have a really really good chance of winning an election.

Of course, I’m generalizing all politicians, and my claims might very well be inaccurate. I hope I’m wrong. I hope that there are still people in Philippines politics who truly are working for the people’s best interests and not their own. The challenge is in attempting to determine which ones are genuine and which ones are phony. It’s hard to tell.

New Watch via Swagbucks

I received my new watch in the mail. It's a Casio sports watch, almost like a G-Shock. It's solar powered, water resistant for up to a 165 feet, shock resistant, etc. I really like it. I haven't worn a watch for a long time, and it's about time I put one on again. I'm at point in my life where time is very tight and every minute counts. The carefree days of not needing to know what time it is are long gone.

The best thing about this watch is.... I got it for FREE because of Swag Bucks. I posted about Swag Bucks a few months ago [click here to read]. I managed to collect enough Swag Bucks to get redeem enough Amazon gift cards to buy this watch without paying a single cent. Last year, I was able to collect enough Swag Bucks to buy a Garmin GPS. Earning Swag Bucks takes time, and it doesn't have to take too much effort. Just use Swag Bucks to search for things just like Google, and once in a while you earn Swag Bucks. You collect as much as you need to redeem prizes or gift cards. It's definitely not a scam, and they don't even spam your email. It's very straightforward and legit. Check it out for yourself! Definitely ask me if you have any questions or concerns about how it works.

A Lot of Driving - High Miles

It's only been 12 days since we got the Yaris, and I already drove over 1000 miles on it. I haven't even been on a road trip yet. I drive too much. It's my daily commute to work and back home that mainly contributed to the high miles. I drive at least 100 miles a day. At this rate, I would be getting an oil change every month.

Songkran Festival - Thai New Year 2010

The Thai New Year celebration was this past Sunday at Wat Thai in Silver Spring. Songkran festival, April 13-15, is traditionally celebrated in Thailand by "hitting" people with large amounts of water (via water gun, water buckets, water hose, etc), but in Silver Spring, people stayed dry and hot. There were plenty of food and performances all day long. Wat Thai was packed with people of all races. It was an interesting day of eating lots of great food and dessert, and getting a glimpse of a culture different from my own.

Despite the troubling political events happening in Thailand right now, everyone celebrated with little discussions of what is going back home. [Click to see news of current Thai events]

Food tents were packed with people lining up to purchase authentic Thai food that are priced well. It's actually so much cheaper to buy Thai food at the festival than going to a restaurant, and you can find dishes that are not served in restaurants.

The barbecued pork was really good with sticky rice. It was one of a handful of non-spicy food I can eat. Although, you can always request to get your food non-spicy or mild, and they're limit the number of chili they add in your dish.

There were plenty of food for everyone.

It was perfect day for a picnic as well. The previous years, Thai new year was always cold and wet. This year's weather was perfect.

Dancers dancing a traditional Thai dance with the complete traditional Thai outfit. I have a video, but I have yet to upload it to YouTube.

There was a section for people who want to offer gifts (flowers, candles, etc) to buddha in exchange for a year of good luck.

People also stuck these really thin gold sheets on to the buddha for good fortune. From what I heard, these are real gold, and it was disrespectful and bad luck to peel them off of the buddha. So I resisted. ^_^

People can take a small scoop of water using the small cups and pour it out / sprinkle it on yourself, other people, and another buddha statue. It symbolizes a cleansing process of starting fresh and clean in the new year.

The Mall & Cherry Blossom Festival 2010

Last Saturday was the Cherry Blossom parade followed by the street festival in DC. DC in general was packed with people because the weather was perfect for outside fun and activities. We just went around the street festival, got some sushi, watched a mini-concert, and lined up for free stuff from the McDonald's tent and Geico tent. We didn't even get to see the actually cherry blossoms, but I think I've seen enough just driving around the DC-Maryland area.

People dressed up as anime characters, and wore other traditional Japanese outfits.

A mini cherry blossom tree - at least that's what I think this is.

Miniature Japanese wooden structure - commonly seen in Japan as temples and shrines.

People made Japanese art works and crafts, and learned to write in Japanese.

After all the festivities, we made a quick trip to the Smithsonian castle and took a few photos

Someone placed their dog in a stroller. They did not have a child or a baby, so the stroller was definitely intended for the dog. The dog looked happy and comfortable.

Pretty flowers in front of the Smithsonian castle. I'm not sure what kind they are because I don't know too much about flowers. They did look very pretty. ^_^

Posing between this cool rock sculpture around the castle garden

We ended the day waiting in line for an hour just to have some Georgetown cupcakes. People passing by the store were looking at us weird because we choose endure the long wait just for cupcakes. I heard it was worth it, and we don't do this everyday, so we waited. It was definitely worth it. Those cupcakes were definitely great.

Apple iPad Craze

We spent a couple of hours at BestBuy playing around with the iPad. It was very enticing, and I'm almost tempted to purchase one, but I couldn't stand the fact that it doesn't have a camera (yet). So I'm holding off and waiting until it comes out with a camera.

Initially, I didn't know what the fuzz was about, but when I got to actually play with it. It was great. The iBook section where you can read e-books is so much better than the Kindle. The colored screen makes it better for viewing books with pictures. The books costs around $9.99 or more, and they have a great collection of free books - classics that are no longer bound by copyrights.

The games were a lot of fun, videos are so much better with the bigger screens, and viewing web pages is almost just like on a computer. It was a little heavy though, so holding it up for a long time might become tiring, but you can definitely set it down if needed. It's definitely lighter than a laptop or a netbook.

When you set it down, it makes it so much easier to type long documents and emails. I also heard the battery life is great. It would definitely be perfect for long trips. If I'm ever flying back to the Philippines, I'm bringing an iPad with me.

Brand New Car - 2010 Toyota Yaris

Dodgie has now been officially replaced by a brand new Toyota Yaris. It was a choice between a 2-door hatchback or this one, and it was also tough to decide whether to get one with manual transmission or an automatic one. Dodgie was manual everything - no power windows, locks, mirrors, steering, transmission, etc. So we figure that it was about time to move up to something more convenient. So we picked one with power everything.

Why a Yaris and not a Corolla? Because it's so much more cuter and we love the hatchback. Corolla's don't have hatchbacks. The Matrix does, but it also is much more pricier.

Why this color? because it was the only one they have. This was the very last hatchback they have available, and we snagged it.

Why not the 2-door or the sedan? We test drove it the 2-door, and it was great, but additional doors equals convenience for backseat passengers. It seemed to be safer to have more doors as well. The sedan just seems too common and standard, so that's off the list.

Why now? Dodgie's in and out of the shop, and we don't want to spend anymore money fixing it. Toyota also had really good deals for new car buyers.

The new Yaris is great. It's pretty spacious inside. It's gas efficient. It has all the standard safety features. Handling is great, and the engine's pretty good as well. Of course, it not going to go to 100 mph in 20 seconds, but it does go pretty fast. It looks great and cute. It's definitely a major upgrade from Dodgie. We're loving it.
